In the near future, a group of scientists attempts to design the first computer endowed with consciousness and capable of autonomous thought. They must face attacks from anti-technology terrorists who see this project as a threat to the human species.

When Will Caster (Johnny Depp) , the project's lead researcher, is murdered, his wife uses the progress of his work to transcend her husband's mind into the first supercomputer in history. Now able to control all networks linked to the Internet, he becomes quasi-omnipotent.
